THE COMMUNITY CHOICE

News & Updates

Hello Students, Co-Workers, Friends, and Family of Matilda Torres! We are very excited to announce our campaign to name the new high school in Madera in honor of Matilda Torres. She was a counselor, educator and community activist in Madera for over 35 years. We think Madera needs to recognize her positive influence on it's students, parents, and residents. You can support this campaign by writing a letter about how Matilda positively influenced your life or the life of someone you know. Send them to: Our PO Box is ready to receive your letters of support. Send them to: Steve Torres, 1625 Howard Rd. #256, Madera, CA 93637.

    • THE NOMINATION PROCESS HAS STARTED AND WE NEED ALL THE NOMINATION THAT WE CAN GET FROM OUR SUPPORTERS. ALL OF THE NOMINATIONS WILL BE REVEALED TO THE MADERA UNIFIED DISTRICT BOARD MEMBERS ON MAY 23, 2017. ONCE THESE ARE REVEALED TO THE BOARD MEMBERS, WE NEED TO CONVINCE THEM THAT THIS IS THE COMMUNITY AND RIGHT CHOICE. THE FINAL DECISION FROM THE BOARD WILL BE REVEALED IN EARLY JUNE.

    • just wanted to keep our supporters updated on the status of the campaign. On February 15th, I have scheduled five speakers who are all former students of Matilda. The speakers are Nick Garcia, Carlos Sanchez, Ozzy DeLuna, and Gus Perez. There is not a specific time set aside for these presentations. This being said, we will speak during the allocated 15 minute public speaking time, which will allow the former students to speak for 3 minutes each. I encourage anyone to be present and show the community support. I will be there around 5:30 with my father and sister in the front of the MUSD office on Howard Street. Please feel free to stop by and say hi and ask any questions or just share stories with us. We always welcome your warm stories. I am pushing to see if the district can set aside time specifically for us or if they will allow for more speakers. Once again, my family and I thank you all for your support.
